Essay Writing Workshop on Digital Detox and Mindfulness at DM Convent School, Faridabad

In the age of smartphones, online learning and constant digital connectivity, developing a healthy relationship with technology has become increasingly important. With this thought, an Essay Writing Workshop on Digital Detox and Mindfulness was organised to encourage young minds to examine their everyday digital habits and express their views through creative writing.

The session opened with an introduction to the theme and the topic, “बच्चों पर अत्यधिक स्क्रीन टाइम के हानिकारक प्रभाव एवं डिजिटल डिटॉक्स”. Participants were invited to speak about the subject, which created an open discussion and helped them connect the theme with their own experiences.

The next segment focused on the fundamentals of creative writing and essay writing. The facilitator explained how to develop an idea, organise thoughts, build a logical flow and present an argument effectively. This prepared the participants for the writing activity while also strengthening their confidence in expressing their ideas.

From Digital Habits to Personal Reflection

The writing activity encouraged participants to look beyond the general discussion on screen time and consider how technology affects their own routines. They wrote about its usefulness as well as concerns associated with excessive use, along with practical ways to maintain a healthier balance.

An important part of the interaction was a simple question:

“Which digital habit would you like to change about yourself?”

The responses brought out personal experiences and practical suggestions, including ways to reduce unnecessary screen use and spend more time on offline activities.

Five students volunteered during the programme and assisted with the smooth conduct of the session. Their initiative, along with the contributions of those who came forward to speak on the microphone, was appreciated through A4 Spiral Registers. All participants received A4 Registers as a token of appreciation for their involvement.

Recognising Thoughtful Expression

Three outstanding essays were selected using five criteria: understanding of the topic, relevance and quality of content, originality and creativity, structure and language, and the strength of the conclusion and personal action.

The selected students received Sketch Books as Best Essay rewards, recognising both their writing and thoughtful engagement with the subject.

Why Conversations Around Digital Detox Matter

Digital technology has transformed the way we learn, communicate and work. In a world where almost every aspect of life is becoming increasingly connected, its benefits are significant. At the same time, prolonged and unbalanced screen use can influence attention, routines, physical activity and opportunities for direct social interaction.

For young people growing up in this environment, awareness needs to go beyond simply limiting screen time. They also need the space to question their habits, understand their choices and identify realistic alternatives.

Writing provided that space during the session. By putting their thoughts on paper, participants were able to think, reflect and suggest practical solutions rather than simply listen to a discussion. Their responses demonstrated the value of engaging children in conversations that connect technology with everyday life.

Positive and impact-oriented feedback from the teachers further reflected the relevance of the initiative and its approach to engaging learners through discussion and creative expression.
