As part of the R2E – Recycling 2 Education initiative, an Art Therapy Workshop on Quilling was conducted at DAV Police Public School, Sector 31, Faridabad, on 12 August 2026. The workshop brought together 50 students from Classes VI–XII around the theme “Digital Detox – Rolling Instead of Scrolling.”
The workshop aimed to encourage students to explore creative activities as a positive alternative to excessive screen time while developing focus, patience, mindfulness, and hands-on skills.
From Scrolling to Creating
The session began with an interactive discussion on students’ screen habits and the role of creative activities in their daily lives. The conversation encouraged students to reflect on how they spend their free time and how simple offline hobbies can provide a meaningful break from digital screens.
During the Quilling activity, students learned how to roll and shape paper strips to create their own designs. They also worked on bookmarks and cards, giving them an opportunity to apply the technique creatively.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Dr. Hema Arora, Principal, DAV Police Public School, highlighted the educational value of introducing Quilling as a skill-based activity. She shared that Quilling can support fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, patience, concentration, and mindfulness. She also emphasised the importance of giving students opportunities to learn practical and creative skills alongside their regular academics.
Ms. Deepti Gupta, Art Teacher, shared that Quilling can develop beyond a classroom activity into a meaningful skill and hobby. Students can use the technique for school projects and assignments and can also explore creative opportunities by making ornaments, decorative products, and other handmade items for exhibitions and stalls.
Students Discover a New Creative Skill
For many students, the workshop was their first experience with Quilling. They found the technique different from familiar paper crafts such as origami and enjoyed learning how simple paper strips could be shaped into creative designs.

The activity required students to work carefully and patiently, keeping their attention on the process. Many students expressed interest in continuing Quilling during their free time and using creative activities as an alternative to spending extended periods scrolling on their phones.
Encouraging Mindful Offline Engagement
The workshop demonstrated how a simple creative activity can help students pause, focus, and create. By connecting Quilling with Digital Detox, the session encouraged students to look at their free time differently and explore hobbies that support both creativity and well-being.
The distribution of A4 sketchbooks and registers further encouraged students to continue writing and creative activities beyond the workshop.
Appreciation & Acknowledgement
We sincerely appreciate the support and cooperation of Dr. Hema Arora, Principal, DAV Police Public School, for encouraging skill-based and creative learning among students.
Special thanks to Ms. Deepti Gupta and Ms. Kusum, for their valuable coordination, guidance, and efforts in conducting the workshop successfully.
Rolling Instead of Scrolling
“Rolling Instead of Scrolling” was more than just the theme of the workshop. It encouraged students to make a conscious shift from passive screen time towards activities that involve their hands, minds, and imagination.
Through Quilling, students experienced how creativity can become a simple, enjoyable, and meaningful part of everyday life.
